University of Akron’s Third Annual Pinkout Results and Takeaways

This past weekend, the University of Akron was host to 12 other squads including THREE JV squads! This was the largest tournament of the 2017-2018 season so far, and might be the largest until Akron hosts the second annual WAR sometime in the spring. During the tournament we saw some great match-ups, some nail biting inducing overtime points, some squash matches, but all in all, it was a great weekend of dodgeball. Adam Hynes and I take a look.

BGSU Invitational Preview

The 2017-2018 NCDA season is in full force midway through the first semester. With well over 50 matches played so far during the year, this has arguably been the most exciting (certainly most active) season the NCDA has seen to date. With that in mind, it should be no surprise to see even more activity taking place this weekend at Bowling Green State University (otherwise known as BSGU) (no, unfortunately that isn’t a typo). The following six varsity teams will be in attendance: BGSU, OU, OSU, CSU, Towson, and UK. Although primarily an Ohio tournament, the introduction of a couple competitive out of state opponents gives this tournament a bit of flare. In the paragraphs to come, I will give a brief summary of each team, their upcoming opponents, a few interview questions, and end it with my own personal predictions of how things will shake out.

World Dodgeball Federation Preview

THE NCDA TAKES ON THE WORLD!! October 21st-22nd

The World Dodgeball Championships are this weekend, and the NCDA was privileged to receive an invitation to play in this event from Duane Wysynski, President of Dodgeball Canada.

The NCDA will be fielding two teams during this event, USA Blue and USA Red. The two teams are led by two of most experienced dodgeball players in the NCDA. Kenneth Mize (Saginaw Valley) will be leading the USA Blue team, while Jeff Starr (Ohio State) will be leading the USA Red squad. Selecting the teams were hard, we had some long and fierce deliberation between Jeff and Myself. The teams were hard to pick but after a few days we finally figured out our teams. Here I will now go into the depth about the teams and the strengths of each team, also I will include who was our number 1 pick and why for each team. Standings as of 2017-10-17

We had just one event this weekend, the third annual Pink Out hosted by Akron at the Goodyear Hall. This one event did have 17 ranked matches, three JV contests, and ten teams competing.

The Gonzalez System now includes 250 technical upsets in 1317 ranked matches, and we’re up to 67 matches this season which continues to break records. Seven JV contests as well.  Continue reading “Standings as of 2017-10-17”

Standings as of 2017-10-11

In three events across a similarly expansive swath of the country as last week, we played 15 ranked matches and three JV contests. This has brought the records to a nice and round 1300 ranked matches. We saw a feature article with Dylan and Felix, in this feature article, Felix and I will present some more fun facts regarding that large chunk of data. Complete records span eight seasons, from the Opening Match on 2010-09-25 to this weekends games of 2017-10-08. While we have a number of matches recorded from 2005-2010, those records are not complete and as reliable so we refer to those as the dark times.

We had three events this weekend at PSU, GSU, and GVSU.

So far:

  • 50 matches played in the 2018 Season (another round number!)
  • 23 teams of our 32 active teams have played (not as round)
  • just 1 overtime (way under average)
  • 11 technical upsets (about on target)
  • a historical leader dips (more on that later)

NCDA Stats 2011 to Present

With the first month of the season in the books we have already seen 50 games played through 9 events with 282 points being scored. It is still very early in the season but it is already looking like we are on pace to break several records this year, including some big ones like total number of games played and average points scored per game.

President Felix Perrone was bored one day so he ran some numbers and came up with some cool stats about the NCDA. While we have some incomplete stone age records going back to our first season in 2005, these stats use our complete records which date back to September 2010, up through this weekend.

Weekend Recap – Winners & Losers

Anyone who follows college dodgeball closely knows that this past weekend featured a number a great events across the country.  This past Saturday, Penn State hosted James Madison, Maryland, and Towson in an East Coast tourney that would provide more insight into where each of those teams are at.  Also on Saturday, one of college dodgeball’s newest rivalries took place on the campus of Georgia Southern.  UNG and GSU battled it out with a double-header, in the South Region’s first event of the season.  Then, on Sunday, Grand Valley hosted their Gauntlet tournament with every Michigan school (plus Kent State) in attendance.

Georgian Civil War II – Gonzalez Preview

North and South are back at it again. Our two college teams in Georgia are meeting for another Civil War double header in Statesboro. In case you were wondering, North Georgia has the Nighthawk and Georgia Southern the Eagle.

The first Georgian Civil War was an induction match for both teams (#42 and #43), with UNG coming out with both wins.

North Georgia starts off with a 37.119, and Georgia Southern starts off with a 37.489 and is given a +1 for home court advantage. That gives GSU the small favor here, but the matches are far from predictive with such a shallow Rating Gap (1.370). Gauntlet Tournament Preview

This Sunday, a handful of historically strong college dodgeball teams will congregate at GVSU Fieldhouse Arena on the campus of Grand Valley State University for the ‘Gauntlet’ dodgeball tournament.  As has become the norm, GVSU will be hosting a fall tournament that will provide much more clarity to where each Michigan school stands at this point in the year, because all four Michigan teams will be in attendance.  Along with these four squads from the state of Michigan, we also will see Kent State University in the building on Sunday.  Before I get into my preview, the schedule for this weekend’s clash in Allendale, Michigan is listed below:
