BOTM: 2017 September

The one thing lacking in Michael Riley’s game, is that he doesn’t have any good dodgeball action shots. Someone bring a camera to CMU’s next tournament and fix this…

Michael Riley – Central Michigan

The Baller of the Month for September goes to one of the most well known players in the league: Michael Riley.  Taking over as captain for Central Michigan University this year, Riley has had a very successful start to his tenure.  The Chippewas currently are undefeated with a 6-0 record.  Not only that, but they have avenged their title game loss to Grand Valley State with an early season 4-2 win over the defending champs.

Riley has made a name for himself over the years both for his impressive on court skills, as well as for his abundance of confidence.  He has developed into an all-around star player for the Chippewas, and is one of my early favorites to take home league MVP at the end of the season.

I had the privilege of interviewing one of dodgeball’s most talented (and outspoken) stars.  My conversation with Michael hit on many topics, including his take on CMU’s early season success, his leadership style, what his go-to pregame meal is, who he would least want to fist fight in the NCDA, and how much money he lost thanks to an ill-advised preseason bet that he made…  Check out our interview below: Continue reading “BOTM: 2017 September”

Power Rankings – October 2017

We are one month into a new year of collegiate dodgeball competition, so I felt it would be fitting to put together a “power rankings” so we can see where each team stands at this point in the season.  Below is my list of the top 15 teams in the country as of the start of October (my plan is to provide this list at the start of each month throughout the entire dodgeball season).

Please note, this list is my own opinion on where teams stand right now, and it has no effect on the actual NCDA standings, or Nationals seeding.  Also note, I have only ranked teams that have competed in a game so far this season.  Those teams who have yet to play a match are not listed.  This list is based on merit (what you’ve done this year), so if you’re offended with where your team stands, do something about it and win more games!  Enjoy…

  1. Central Michigan

Easy choice at number one.  Central Michigan is sitting pretty at 6-0.  They already hold wins over three of the other top five teams in my power rankings.  Very impressive start to the year.  Continue reading “Power Rankings – October 2017”

During Fiscal Year 2017, the NCDA closed our existing checking account, transferring all assets into another account with the same financial institution, as a safety precaution due to a stolen checkbook during the year. No unauthorized activity took place with NCDA account before it was closed.

Some upcoming treasury items to note: The NCDA will be moving from the cash basis of accounting to the accrual basis, effective for Fiscal Year 2018.

Keep an eye out in your team’s inbox for the 2017-18 season league dues. Also don’t forget to choose the NCDA as your Amazon Smile beneficiary!

If you have any questions, comments, concerns about the financial position of the NCDA, or how our funds will be used going forward, please reach out to Mike McNicholas, NCDA Treasurer, at ncdadodgeball@gmail.com, or contact any other member of the Executive Board.

Standings as of 2017-10-03

+1200 mile road trip!

College Dodgeball closed out the opening month of the 2018 Season with an action packed Saturday. Fifteen teams played across three venues spread over 1215 travel miles, where 21 ranked matches were played, and in which 118 points were scored.

Think about all those lazy Shot Clock reset throws.

Of these Saturday games, five were technical upsets according to the Gonzalez system. None were extreme upsets but interesting regardless. We have 244 technical upsets in 1285 ranked matches.  Continue reading “Standings as of 2017-10-03”

UMD Tourney Preview

The following was written by
Jeremy Brown:

This weekend, Maryland will be hosting the first full-scale tournament on the East Coast this season. This tournament is going to be pretty big in seeing where teams stand to start the season, particularly Towson facing JMU with East Coast supremacy on the line. But before I get into all the drama this upcoming weekend, let me first recap the tournament hosted by Towson this past weekend.

Standings as of 2017-09-26

We are only three events in and 14 ranked matches into the 2018 Season. We’ve already had 11 teams compete, and we have oodles more games (at least 21) to see this upcoming weekend with events at UNL (Cornhusker Clash), Kent (Summit Street Slugfest), and UMD. There’s a lot of activity to close out a very busy September. I can’t express how excited I am to see the match count grow.

This weekend saw only five ranked matches and no technical upsets. They were held at Towson and a double header at UK. In the current Gonzalez System, there are now 239 technical upsets in 1264 ranked matches since accurate record keeping started 2010-09-25.

As stated in the previous Standings release, a couple things to reiterate for a couple more weeks: Continue reading “Standings as of 2017-09-26”

First East Coast Showdown: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

This past weekend MSU opened up the 2017-18 NCDA season with the EA tournament in East Lansing, MI.  There were certainly some interesting surprises, but the main point is that dodgeball is back!  Now, it is the first chance for some East Coast schools to show what they’re all about.

This Saturday, Towson University has the pleasure of hosting the first event of the season which will also include Stevenson University and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).  Towson comes in as the top rated team after having their best season ever last year followed by VCU and Stevenson.  This will be their opportunity to flex their muscle against some familiar opponents and start the year strong.  That being said, Stevenson and VCU won’t make it easy, and are each looking for a statement win.  Let’s take a look at some things to watch with each team, from the good to the bad, and even the ugly.
