Standings as of 2017-10-11

This feature article was co-authored with Felix Perrone

In three events across a similarly expansive swath of the country as last week, we played 15 ranked matches and three JV contests. This has brought the records to a nice and round 1300 ranked matches. We saw a feature article with Dylan and Felix, in this feature article, Felix and I will present some more fun facts regarding that large chunk of data. Complete records span eight seasons, from the Opening Match on 2010-09-25 to this weekends games of 2017-10-08. While we have a number of matches recorded from 2005-2010, those records are not complete and as reliable so we refer to those as the dark times.

We had three events this weekend at PSU, GSU, and GVSU.

So far:

  • 50 matches played in the 2018 Season (another round number!)
  • 23 teams of our 32 active teams have played (not as round)
  • just 1 overtime (way under average)
  • 11 technical upsets (about on target)
  • a historical leader dips (more on that later)

NCDA Stats 2011 to Present

With the first month of the season in the books we have already seen 50 games played through 9 events with 282 points being scored. It is still very early in the season but it is already looking like we are on pace to break several records this year, including some big ones like total number of games played and average points scored per game.

President Felix Perrone was bored one day so he ran some numbers and came up with some cool stats about the NCDA. While we have some incomplete stone age records going back to our first season in 2005, these stats use our complete records which date back to September 2010, up through this weekend.

Georgian Civil War II – Gonzalez Preview

North and South are back at it again. Our two college teams in Georgia are meeting for another Civil War double header in Statesboro. In case you were wondering, North Georgia has the Nighthawk and Georgia Southern the Eagle.

The first Georgian Civil War was an induction match for both teams (#42 and #43), with UNG coming out with both wins.

North Georgia starts off with a 37.119, and Georgia Southern starts off with a 37.489 and is given a +1 for home court advantage. That gives GSU the small favor here, but the matches are far from predictive with such a shallow Rating Gap (1.370). Because we have only two matches, we can talk about all the possibilities.  Continue reading “Georgian Civil War II – Gonzalez Preview”

Standings as of 2017-03-14

UWP/DePaul have played 7 games with each other in this Season, with the record being UWP 5-2 DePaul. The players of these two teams were curious if this made a League record. Turns out, it ties for second. The League record for games played against a single opponent in a single season is 9 games played.

In their overall 14 matches over their history, the record stands UWP 12-2 DePaul. Prehistory records include a couple more, here and there, but to take this into consideration: before 2017, DePaul/UWP have only played once a season, on average.

Existing Record:
2015, 9 games: GVSU 9-0 MSU (inc 2 “doubleheaders”)
2015, 7 games: GVSU 6-1 CMU (inc 0 doubles)
2016, 7 games: GVSU 5-2 MSU (inc 1 doubleheader)
2017, 7 games: GVSU 5-2 MSU (inc 2 doubleheaders)
2017, 7 games: UWP 5-2 DePaul (inc 1 doubleheader)

NCDA Matchups 2010-Present: A Closer Look

NCDA President Felix Perrone recently provided me with an interesting set of data.  He compiled the records for each team in the league against each of the opponents that they have played from fall of 2010 (when the NCDA’s official records begin) to present day.  Note, there are game results available prior to 2010, but not all scores were accurately recorded until that fall of 2010, so the “official” records begin then.  Feel free to visit the “Standings” tab on this website and explore for yourself.

Anyway, listed below are the top 50 ‘win totals’ for one team over a single opponent.  Basically these are all the matchups where one team has at least 6 wins over their opponent.

Keep in mind this is only from 2010 to present.  Obviously I would like to point out that while GVSU is 29-3 over MSU since 2010, the actual all-time series total is 43-3!  For those of you that can’t do math, this means GV had a 14-0 record over MSU prior to 2010 when official records began.  So, while examining the stats, be cognizant of the fact that other matchup totals may be off a bit due to the fact that this is 2010-present.

I will give the rest of my thoughts below the table:

Interesting Midseason Statistics

Following the Whitewater Winter Bash at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (UWW) on December 4th, there are no more scheduled tournaments for the remainder of the 2016 calendar year.  This has certainly been an active year in the NCDA, with many brand new teams, even more tournaments, and overall, tons of dodgeball.  As a result, I wanted to take the time to highlight some of the league leaders in some interesting stats (or at least what I thought was interesting) over the course of this season.  With that being said, let’s take a look at some of these “key” stats.

2016 Spartan Invite Exchanges

This year’s Spartan Invite (also noted as MSU Invite in some past years) includes more Michigan teams (read: ALL of them) than historically seen. For the initial years, MSU has tried to focus on inviting out of state teams, giving MSU a great chance to see the League without ever leaving home! For many events we’d see a little Founding Member round robin including DePaul, Kent, OSU and MSU happening along the other invited teams.

But sometimes you can’t hold to tradition because of a multitude of reasons that I wouldn’t hold on anyone. In this case, Kent, BGSU, and DePaul join the fray. They also happen to be stalwart competitors at many past fall quarter Spartan Invites. I sometimes like to consider BGSU and DePaul part of the Michigan region for the pure fact they often play these teams more than anywhere else. Continue reading “2016 Spartan Invite Exchanges”

2016 Wes Hopkins Fastest Arm Contest

CHICAGOOffice of the Director of Officiating (and Records):
The NCDA conducted another survey of the abilities of the League’s student-athletes during Nationals 2016 in Bowling Green, Ohio. This year’s Fastest Arm was named in honor of the current record holder, Wes Hopkins of Kentucky, and presented by the DePaul Dodgeball Society for supplying the radar gun. Mr. Hopkins’ record from Nationals 2013 still stands at 83 miles per hour.  Continue reading “2016 Wes Hopkins Fastest Arm Contest”

GVSU’s victories in 1000 Matches

The data covered here only covers ranked matches played through the seven seasons of 2011 to 2017, specifically 2010-09-25 to 2016-10-10. In that time we’ve played 1002 ranked matches and recorded 1084 line item events. For the purposes of these articles, we’ll only cover those 1002 matches.

Of the 1002 ranked matches we’ve recorded, GVSU has won 89% of the time, going 146-18 including going 9-4 in Overtime. Whenever GVSU loses, it’s 90th percentile news.

I should note this winning tradition basically begins from their first year back in 2006, one of the most successful of any first year team. GVSU did have an undefeated season prior to complete record keeping started on 2010-09-25. Interestingly, GVSU’s winning tradition spans almost all member teams that have ever participated in the NCDA. They have recorded wins on all Member Teams save just a few:  Continue reading “GVSU’s victories in 1000 Matches”

Where we are in 1000 ranked matches: OT

The data covered here only covers ranked matches played through the seven seasons of 2011 to 2017, specifically 2010-09-25 to 2016-10-10. In that time we’ve played 1002 ranked matches and recorded 1084 line item events. Events can include JV matches, scrimmages, special NCDA matches like the All Star Game, Ladies’ Match, May Day, among other NCDA related things. For the purposes of this article, we’ll only cover those 1002 matches.

Hunter Ford asks: Who’s had the most Overtime wins?

Overtime is a Michigan thing. The current four Michigan teams top the list in most Overtimes played, but we could get really into numbers on this subject. There’s four undefeated teams in OT, but those teams have only participated in 1 or 2 overtimes. “Predicting” when an overtime might occur given both team’s initial ratings has been a small white whale of mine. I don’t think there’s enough data yet.  Continue reading “Where we are in 1000 ranked matches: OT”
