The 2017 NCDA All Star Game Participants – Presented by SAVAGE Apparel Co.

For the second year in a row, SAVAGE Apparel Co. is our headlining sponsor for the NCDA’s 2017 All Star Game. The team uniforms for this match will be provided by SAVAGE; they will be dry-fit, fully sublimated uniforms. They look amazing and we’re very excited to be able to present each of the All Stars with one of these jersey. This partnership between SAVAGE and NCDA is a great way for SAVAGE to be able to sample their excellent quality gear to each team. As a reminder, teams can purchase gear from SAVAGE at a discounted price from their website.

This year’s game will feature two players from each NCDA team, with a draft taking place on March 26th at 8:00PM Eastern. The draft will be broadcasted to YouTube and a link will be provided on our website and our Facebook page for your viewing pleasure.

Kevin Bailey will be the honorary coach for one side, while Jacob Leski will coach the other squad. These two executive board members will pick their choices in a snake-style draft during the 2017 All Star Draft.

Rule Proposal – Blood Rule

If at any time a player has blood on their clothes or person, they will receive 30 seconds to remove any and all traces of blood from their clothes and/or person. If the player cannot remove the blood in the allotted time, the team will be forced to take a time out, and sub the player out. If the team doesn’t have any timeouts left, the player will be taken out of the game, and will ineligible for the remainder of the point (not match). The clocks will then be reset according to the team timeouts rule. (The team that has the player with the blood will act as the team that is calling the timeout.) However, if the team with the bloodied player has a throw clock that is above 10 (for the 15 count) or above 5 (for the 10 count) their shot clock will be reset down to that number (10 or 5) in order to allow them enough time to throw.

Rule Proposal – # of Captains

Teams are allowed a combination of 4 captains & assistant captains (any combination you’d like). Ex – 1C, 3A. Or 2C, 2A

Rationale: We’ve had 2C & 2A for a while at CMU, starting my 2nd to last year there, and at MSU we’ve had 1C, 3A this year and 4A last year (lol). And I know many teams also have more than 3 captains though 7 is too many (shout out to SVSU 😄).

I believe having 4 captains allows for promotion of more younger players to prominent roles within the “on-court” portion of teams and furthers their development as leaders greatly. This also encourages more active involvement and makes more players feel like they have an active voice within their organization on and off the court.

Rule Proposal – Captain Markings

Policy Proposal – Nationals Scheduling

Nationals is two things: the National Tournament (Section 4.3.4.6) and the extra-strength Non-Bracket Matches (Section 4.3.4.5). Rule 4.3.4.5 is purposely written broadly, but for the time being we’ll refer to it as Saturday and Sunday. Currently, it defines that each team gets three unique opponents to play on Saturday.

I propose a less stringent definition of Saturday’s required games, a minimum of two. This will guarantee that each team receives at least three matches over the Nationals Event weekend.

This is not an explicit drop to two games, we Need to be broader with our written policy. For smaller events (teams number 16 and smaller) we can fit three games in. The point is, requiring 3 matches is too stringent. Adding more teams to Nationals but keeping 3 matches going in will likely require that Friday matches are mandatory. Rule Proposal – Revisit Roster Size

Reducing Roster Sizes

For the 5^th year in a row, I am proposing reducing the active player count on the court from 15v15 to 12v12. Before you blow this off, and have the mentality of “change isn’t good”, I urge you to just take a few minutes to read my rationale below:

Currently, we play a VERY large scale game with roster sizes ranging from 10-20 players with 10-15 active players on the court at the beginning of each point.

Proposed Rule Change: Change Throw Line Distance to 27 ft

Alright everyone, pay attention. This is important:

What is the biggest issue with the NCDA’s current gameplay format? Simple. It’s too slow-paced. Not enough points are scored, and teams often decide to play “stall-ball” because it is strategically their best option in certain situations. So, as we go through all of the rule proposals for the upcoming year, we need to keep in mind that this aspect of the game needs to be fixed.

We need to put rules in place that will make our game more fast-paced and exciting. Sure, there are countless ways to go about fixing the slow-paced style that plagues our league right now, but in my opinion, no rule change will be as beneficial as this one: The throw line (attack line) needs to decrease from 30 ft. to 27 ft. in the rulebook.

*Note: I’d prefer it go all the way down to 25 ft., but 27 is a less drastic change that more people will be on board with. If it works well, we can consider moving it to 25 the following season!

Anyway, in the current NCDA ruleset, the throw line is designated as 30 ft. from the back line:

(2.2.2.2 Attack Line – A line clearly marked 30′ from each baseline. Players may cross Halfcourt and move up to the opposite Attack Line. Blue painters tape may be used to mark as it is least likely to ruin the finish on the court.)

Opinion: NCDA Bracketology & Potential Nationals Matches

We already infused the March Madness style into our Baller of The Month voting, so why not for an actual bracket as well? Now, keep in mind there are still a couple events that are on the way, which are sure to impact the current standings, along with…well you know, day 1 of Nationals. But I have to work with what I have darn it!! So given those limitations, let’s take a look at some intriguing matches to watch that could happen on a round-by-round basis when we get to the Sunday bracket play.

As a disclaimer, included are my personal predictions on a round by round basis, ultimately leading to a final champion. These seeds are subject to change up until April 9th.

Nationals 2017 Announcement

Get ready y’all. This is going to be a HUGE event. Nationals 2017 will have roughly 460 players representing 24 schools from 10 different states. With so many dodgeball players from all over flocking to Lexington on April 8 & 9, its bound to be a good time!

Nationals 2017 will feature 59 ranked games, in addition to the NCDA Alumni Match, NCDA Ladies’ Match, and the NCDA All Star Game presented by SAVAGE apparel.

This is INSANE and I couldn’t be happier! This will be the largest Nationals the NCDA has ever hosted. This year’s attendance will break last year’s (which set the current record) 18 team tournament by 33%.

Entry fees are due March 15 and can be paid via check or through PayPal.

Nationals 2017 Registration Forms

–Important Nationals News–

Okay friends, here is the stuff you’ve been waiting for. As you know, the official apparel sponsor of Nationals 2017 is SAVAGE Apparel. We need to have our shirt order turned into them no later than March 1st, which means we also need your team’s information.

There are four tasks to complete before March 1st concerning Nationals:

Captains: Register your team for Nationals 2017 in Lexington, KY at University of Kentucky.
Captains: Submit your team’s all stars for the 7th Annual NCDA All Star Game presented by SAVAGE. Each attending team is eligible to submit two all stars to compete in this year’s ASG. Each all star will receive a complimentary jersey from SAVAGE. This year’s format will be a draft. All Star coaches for this year’s event are Kevin Bailey and Jacob Leski.
1. (Teams not competing at Nationals, but sending representatives, can still participate in the All Star Game. Submit your All Stars!
2. (Teams not attending Nationals can also submit All Stars and will have the option to purchase a jersey at a cost TBD).
Lady Dodgeballers, register for the 6th Annual NCDA Ladies’ Match. There is no limit to the amount of participants each team can have in the match. Each team is entitled to two ladies match shirts each for free, if they have ladies interested in playing (teams with no ladies cannot submit requests for shirts; they cost money). Additional Ladies’ Match shirts can be purchased for $10/shirt, but they MUST register in order to receive a shirt. We will NOT be purchasing any extras.
Alumni, if you would like to officiate at any point during the weekend, register here. There are benefits for officials including: receiving a free event shirt once you’ve officiated 3 full games, receiving a hotel stipend for officiating 60% of the total rounds, and getting paid per game (see registration form for additional details).

ALL OF THESE FORMS MUST BE SUBMITTED NO LATER THAN MARCH 1ST IN ORDER TO RECEIVE SHIRTS. If your team is not registered by March 1st, you will NOT receive event, ladies’ match, or all star shirts/jerseys.

Nationals fees are also due no later than March 15, 2017. You should have received an invoice last week in your email. If you did NOT, please let us know ASAP. Registration fees are $300 this year and will go toward paying for: Officials, tshirts, balls, court tape, and camera equipment.

Let your favorite Board member know what questions you have, because I know you have some.

Policy Proposal – Senior Eligibility for Nationals

If Nationals Bracket-Play was Today

Happy New Year to all of you in the NCDA.

As we start out this new year, I thought it would be cool to take a look at what NCDA Nationals 2017 would look like if it happened right now.

Listed below is the bracket for Nationals if it were to take place today. In this scenario I am assuming that every team that has played an NCDA game this season will make the trip to University of Kentucky for the season’s final tournament. Note that the seeding is based off the NCDA’s current standings.
