KENT-Rec: Kent def OSU 2-1 in the Multi-purpose Room at the Rec Center

Kent State University and The Ohio State University met for their respective opening matches on Saturday September 15th at Kent State’s recreation center. Both teams were able to field a majority of veterans with Kent bringing two new players and Ohio State five. Ohio State got a quick win in the first match followed by back to back wins by Kent State. The last game came down to the wire, as Ohio State attempted to eliminate the few remaining Kent players left in play in order to gain a tie. The match ended with Kent State winning 2-1. There were approximately fifty fans in attendance.

UK defeats WKU 4-0

LEXINGTON-Alumni: UK def WKU 4-0 in the Alumni Gym

The University of Kentucky and Western Kentucky University squared off on their opening matches on Saturday September 15th. Between UK and WKU both teams fielded a combined 30 veterans to start the opening match. Both team started to shake of the rust from the summer and began a slow paced first half. UK led going into the break 1-0 lead. Both teams came out in the second half with something to prove and exhibited a much faster pace and ended the match with UK winning 4-0. On two separate points WKU forced UK down to a 10 second shot-clock only to be denied the point.

The several hundred people in attendance were given a scare just minutes into the game as UK’s Jeffery DeWitt (#22) suffered a severe concussion while failing to properly land from a dodge in midair. The injury required multiple stitches and an overnight stay at the hospital. We are glad to report that Jeffrey DeWitt is looking to make a good recovery in the upcoming months.

Second Weekend of the 2012-2013 Season Continues the Rivalry Theme

After Depaul beat in-town rival Moody Bible Institute last Friday, the 2012-2013 season continues with two big rivalry matches. Leading up to the football game between the two schools, the University of Kentucky will host Western Kentucky University on Saturday. Both of these schools have made noise in previous seasons, including UK being the National Runner Up last season. Featuring Wes Hopkins, the hardest thrower in the NCDA, the WIldcats will look to continue a great home court record as they play the Hilltoppers. Kentucky went 4-2 in 2011-2012 at home, including a victory over WKU. The Hilltoppers will have a new look with Alex Sorrels at the helm, but the team should remain a good one. WKU only played four matches, going 2-2, outside of Nationals 2012, but the two losses were both to Kentucky. However, the two losses were each by one point, so WKU has a good chance in this one. If WKU can minimize the damage done by Hopkins and control the balls they can pull off the upset, but if they cannot, they could be in trouble. For the Wildcats, they’ll need more players to step up like they did at Nationals and prove that last season wasn’t a fluke. This could be an early indication if Kentucky is ready to stay with the dodgeball elite and could give them some momentum going into the first major tournament of the season, the Ohio State Round Robin.

The other game this weekend is between Kent State and The Ohio State University. The Buckeyes are traveling to Kent for the big matchup of possibly the top two schools in the state of Ohio, and the Golden Flashes went 3-1 against their in-state rivals. OSU did take their one win at Kent State however. Both teams have new leadership at the top, with Kyle Fitzpatrick gone for Kent State, leaving Dan Shackelford and Camden Fullmer in charge, and with Ryan Carlton and Jude DuPart taking over for Ohio State. The Buckeyes will look to use their slow down approach to take an advantage over the free flowing, fast moving Flashes, and they’ll need to make some key catches to come out with 2 points. If Kent State can maximize their arm strength and play with some tenacity then they could win this matchup, but it should also be a close one. These two teams will also compete in the Ohio State Round Robin in October, so we could see a rematch very soon.

2012 Battle of the Brown Line

CHICAGO-Solheim: DePaul def MBI 3-1 in the Battle of the Brown Line in the first match of the season.

For the start of the season, the two Chicago NCDA Member Teams clashed in the Battle of the Brown Line today. Named after the mass transit train line that connects the two urban campuses, the match was held at Moody Bible Institute’s classic Solheim Center. Moody had an enthusiastic home court crowd of about 100 people, the norm whether the team plays at DePaul or at home. DePaul brought along about 5 fans, but they’ve always been able to entertain themselves.

The play of the match presented two largely even teams. There was not many violations of any kind, with only a few shot clock violations spread across either team for the duration of the match. While the first point lasted nine minutes and dwindled to a 1 on 1 contest, with DePaul Vice President Brian Van Meter performing a drop and catch to win the point. It was an exciting, constant show of what large scale college dodgeball is meant to be. At the end of the second half, DePaul led 2-0 despite a strong, aggressive Moody contesting for both points.

Returning to the court after halftime and a happy birthday song for AJ Khah [DePaul 7-F] and Jeremy Schambach [MBI 6-A], Moody played with greater intelligence and managed to force a win within ten minutes. For the duration of the entire match, many throws by Moody landed in DePaul bread baskets which made for easy catches. The key to this point for MBI was ball control, smart throws, and a some crucial team catches. DePaul’s strong offensive throws, clutch catches, and constant gameplay led to their eventual victory.

The remaining second half was the most even contest. Moody fought hard, trying to even up the score and almost brought the game into an overtime under the new 6 on 6 rules. DePaul had a few aggressive plays, with sophomore Matthew “Howitzer” Schroeder using his arm to make some key outs. Even though Moody had the number and ball advantage for a good part of third point, the rest of the DePaul remainder made catches and the advantage turned. The final point lasted for the last ten minutes of the match, ending with a DePaul win in the last fifty seconds.

A comment by sophomore Sam Murphy noted simply:
“DePaul Dodgeball remains Undefeated.”

The Vote on Rules regarding Overtime

Wasn’t much further conversation today, lets throw the options out there and let everyone determine. We can still keep this discussion open until the end of the voting period (voting lasts one week, from Aug 21 2012, 23:00 to Aug 28 23:00 CST).

This is actually a really complicated vote because the proposed change has a number of different options… So, it is my belief that we present it thus (and sort out the counts later). If you have any questions, please let them be known.

Concerning Rule 3.1.4.3 Overtime

Vote Options:

Step 1: First, please select either to change or not to change:
A: No Change – 15 on 15, 10 minute Clock, first team to score a point wins the Match. Rule 3.1.4.3 remains unchanged.
B: Alternative with internal options. The only option that was unopposed was a permanent 10 second shot clock for both teams.

If your team chooses option A, you are done. Submit your vote via the ncdadodgeball@gmail.com email.
If your team chooses option B, please proceed to step 2.

Step 2: Choose Amount of Players: 6 on 6, chosen from any player on the maximum 20 player roster
C: Maximum of 6 on 6, no more than 6 players may be on a side for the point.
D: 6 on 6 to start Overtime, but the remaining 9 players may line up in the Jail and enter play via a Catch.

Step 3: Choose the amount and layout of dodgeballs
E: 7 dodgeballs arranged for an Opening Rush formation of 02320 with balls live on the whistle
F: 7 dodgeballs arranged for an Opening Rush formation of 03130 with balls live on the whistle

Step 4: Choose how to handle the Clock
G: No set time limit, first team to eliminate the other team wins.
H: 10 minute time limit, Rule 3.1.4.3.2 remains as is to decide a victor by count of remaining players.

Quorum Call – Rules on Overtime

Hello Everyone:

Sam Hiller of MSU requested a Quorum be called, relating to changing the NCDA rules regarding Overtime. The forum thread on it has some talk regarding specific options. What is required of the member teams is a vote to change anything at all.

Since we aren’t in a Captains’ Meeting, another process kicks in:
1. A Captain of a Member Team brings up a change, discussion ensues.
2. The change is seconded by another Member Team, discussion ensues.
3. A call for a Voting Quorum using reasonable communication efforts for a maximum of one week, discussion ensues. (current step)
4. If a majority of the voting members agree to a vote, voting Quorum is achieved. If a majority do not agree, the issue is dropped and may be brought up at a later time.
5. Should voting Quorum be achieved, at least one week of discussion ensues, with a narrowing down of vote options.
6. After a week of discussion, the final vote options are gathered and distributed to the teams using reasonable communication efforts.
7. Duration of the vote is one week.

Let me know if that seems fair or unfair. It’s similar to how we did the Opening Rush change.

Please email regarding whether your team agrees to vote or does not agree to vote. We have one week to achieve a quorum, then one week of discussion, then a week of voting.

WIU Club Dodgeball Team To Play for National Title Saturday – Sunday

MACOMB, IL – An emerging club sport at Western Illinois University is training its members to avoid being struck by a 76 mph rubber fastball.

Western’s club dodgeball team will try for its first-ever national collegiate title during a tournament in Saginaw, MI, Saturday-Sunday, April 14-15. Sixteen teams from across the country will compete in pool play April 14 to be ranked for the single-elimination championship matches April 15.

This is the third year the Western dodgeball team has played in the National College Dodgeball Association tournament, finishing fourth each of the first two years. The team has about 25 members, 15 of which will travel to the Michigan tournament.

The club was founded by WIU senior Tim Wohead, of Plainfield, who is also the club’s former president.

“In high school I loved dodgeball,” Wohead said. “When I got to Western my buddy learned that there was a national association so we signed up and it has grown from there. Our practices started on the Rec Center’s racquetball courts.”

Club President Dalton Servatius, a junior from Lombard, joined the club after seeing the team practice in the Donald R. Spencer Student Recreation Center.

Western’s team has lost to Michigan State University during both of its previous national tourney efforts.

The goal of the games is to strike the opposing teams’ players with a large rubber ball. The tournament games consist of two 25-minute sessions.
