In the 2023 Season, we have 8 technical upsets in 59 ranked matches (86.44% success rate) across 10 events.
This season marks the introduction of the NCDA Hybrid Ranking System as voted on by member teams during the 2022 election. The Hybrid Ranking System uses a combination of the Gonzalez System and the NHL Points System.
The Gonzalez System is a computer ranking model similar to Elo and is a rating exchange system based on research performed by World Rugby. It has been adapted by the NCDA to the demands of College Dodgeball, but can be tuned and customized endlessly to incorporate accurate data. It has been used to help determine seeds for the Nationals bracket since Nationals 2014, and was used exclusively for each Nationals bracket between 2017 and 2022.
The NHL Points System is a point-reward system based on the outcome of a match. A team who wins a match is awarded 2 points whether in regulation or overtime, a team who loses a match in overtime is awarded 1 point, and a team who loses in regulation is awarded 0 points.

Ten teams made the trip to Ohio University on October 1st to play in the John Betters’ Bobcat Bonanza III. We saw a few teams make their first appearance of the season including last year’s runner up, Michigan State, while others were looking to improve on past performances. Of the 18 matches played only one ended with a single point difference. What does this say about the teams this season? We’ll go team by team and breakdown what these matches showed us and what to look for in coming tournaments. Also, stay tuned for the Women’s Tournament Recap article.

Cornhusker Clash Recap
On October 8th the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville (UWP) battled it out at the Cornhusker Clash in a double header. UNL was able to come out on top on both matches with finals scores of 7-1 and 4-3.

September 2022 ROTM – Nick Kemer
Since September 2019, the NCDA has been recognizing rookie players that make a statement on the court through their skills, leadership, and ability to mobilize a team. After a phenomenal performance at the Buckeye Showcase on September 18th, the first Rookie of the Month this season goes to Nick Kemer from Ohio State. Nick wowed teammates and spectators with full-body throws, game-changing catches, and league sportsmanship. Power Rankings: October 2022
Team writeups provided by the NCDA Power Ranking Panel
1) Michigan State – Textbook start to the year for the Spartans. MSU travelled to JBBBIII and went undefeated with convincing wins over two top 5 programs (Cincinnati and Ohio). Pretty solid resume if you ask us. Michigan State proved to everyone they are in the title conversation. With plenty of veterans on the roster paired with some young talent, this feels like a team that will progress quite a bit this year while maintaining more consistency than MSU teams of the past. So when can we expect that first GVSU vs. MSU matchup?

This weekend the Michigan Region is back at it again for the Sagnasty Classic! The teams in attendance will be Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU), Grand Valley State University (GVSU), and Western Michigan University (WMU). The games will be played in the Hamilton Gym at the Ryder Center in University Center, Michigan. For GVSU and SVSU, this will be their first tournament of the year, while the Broncos of WMU were in action last weekend at JBBBIII. GVSU and SVSU will have a lot of rust to shake of in their first games back in action, but it shouldn’t take long for them to get back up to speed. For WMU, expect even better play this time around now that they have their first tournament under their belt already. The following is the schedule for Saturday’s event.

We are back at again this weekend with a big doubleheader happening in the newly formed Central Region (previously Midway and South). This clash is between the top teams in the region: University of Nebraska Lincoln (UNL) and the University of Wisconsin Platteville (UWP). The games will be played in Lincoln, Nebraska at the Nebraska Coliseum. Every year Nebraska hosts the Cornhusker Clash and every year it becomes an even bigger battle. These games are always close and tend to go into overtime. Last year, UNL got the best of UWP in games they played, putting up a 5-1 record in the matchup, only losing the last game in OT to the Pioneers. Will this year repeat last year with another OT match at this event? Let’s take a look at the schedule below and see what the captains think heading into this weekend.

Introduction
Ohio University is hosting one of the largest tournaments that we will see in most fall semesters to come – the 3rd Annual John Betters Bobcat Bonanza! This club will play host to nine other teams that will make the trip to Athens, OH and try and earn themselves a few wins on the weekend. Will the Bobcats continue their hot streak on their home turf? Will Michigan State continue the dominance it started last year by knocking of Cincinnati and Ohio in their own state? To answer those questions, let’s take a look into the schools taking the trip to the beautiful campus.

In the 2023 Season, we have 5 technical upsets in 23 ranked matches (78.26% success rate) across 4 events.
The Champ Points System is a point-reward system based on the outcome of a match. A team who wins a match is awarded 2 points whether in regulation or overtime, a team who loses a match in overtime is awarded 1 point, and a team who loses in regulation is awarded 0 points.
The Hybrid Rank is determined by using a team’s rank under both the Gonzalez and Champ systems, with 70% weight on the Gonzalez rank and 30% weight on the Champ rank. Once combined, that gives a team their ‘Hybrid Rating’ and the lower that number is the better position that team will rank overall. As an example, if a team ranks 10th in Gonzalez and 20th in Champ, their Hybrid Rating will be 13.000 (i.e. (10 x 70%) + (20 x 30%) = 13).
