Technical Upset Spotlight

A technical upset in the Gonzalez System is when a lower rated team defeats a higher rated team.

The overall success rate of the WDBF Mens system is currently 79.64% based on 34 technical upsets in 167 ranked matches played since 2013-09-27.

The overall success rate of the WDBF Womens system is currently 69.49% based on 36 technical upsets in 118 ranked matches played since 2013-09-27.

HKG def CAN 11-10 (W)

42.514 def 47.648, exchanging 3.027

A high scoring game and but lowest point differential possible. OT wasn’t noted, but if this was 10-10 going into overtime that would be an exciting match. This is the largest rating gap of the technical upsets across both Mens and Womens Divisions. It ranks 8 of 36 technical upsets.

MYS def USA 6-4 (W)

45.220 def 45.217+1, exchanging 2.200

A 2017 Gold def 2017 Bronze (at home). This minor technical upset ranks 28 of 36. USA had the narrow favor because of home court advantage is given 1 rating point. When closely rated teams face each other, the stake is large for both teams and harder to accurately predict. While not statistically significant in terms of big upsets, these are worth more for both teams.

USA def CAN 8-4 (W)

43.119+1 def 44.621, exchanging 2.100

Ranks 34 of 36 technical upset, this match fell just within the range not to trigger the margin of victory modifier. This bode well for Canada, who were top rated going into Day 2, however the USA could have used an extra bit of points exchanged here to edge pass Australia’s rating.

USA def MYS 7-6 OT (M)

47.114+1 def 51.276 in OT, exchanging 2.632

This upset had the largest rating gap of Round Robin play in the Mens Division, ranking 10 of 34 historical technical upsets, in the 70th percentile. While there are three other potential OT upsets ahead of this one, this is the largest technical upset of a confirmed overtime match.

HKG def ITA 12-5 (M)

35.246 def 37.506, exchanging 3.678

The last match of the day for these teams and for the Mens division was a weighty one. This has the second largest rating gap of the division, and ranks 16 of 34 overall technical upsets.

CAN def USA 8-6 (M)

48.548 def 49.505, exchanging 2.392

USA def AUS 7-3

46.696 def 48.634, exchanging 2.18

Elimination Bracket Preview

A small preview using a rolling schedule, and assuming no upsets:

ITA-M (33.828) v ARG-M (30.756) for 1.386 / 2.614 [5+ 2.078 / 3.922]

AUS-W (45.802) v HKG-W (41.283) for 1.096 / 2.904 [5+ 1.644 / 4.000]

USA-W (46.220) v MEX-W (33.734) for 0.020 / 4.000 [5+ 0.020 / 4.000]

USA-M (50.746) v ITA-M (35.214) for 0.020 / 4.000 [5+ 0.020 / 4.000]
CAN-M (50.939) v MEX-M (41.329) for 0.078 / 3.922 [5+ 0.117 / 4.000]

AUS-M (46.355) v NZL-M (39.869) for 0.703 / 3.297 [5+ 1.054 / 4.000]

MYS-W (49.870) v AUS-W (46.898) for 1.406 / 2.594 [5+ 2.109 / 3.891]
USA-W (46.240) v CAN-W (43.587) for 1.469 / 2.531 [5+ 2.204 / 3.796]

CAN-M (51.017) v USA-M (50.766) for 1.950 / 2.050 [5+ 2.925 / 3.075]
MYS-M (48.699) v AUS-M (47.058) for 1.672 / 2.328 [5+ 2.508 / 3.492]

Again, that’s at best a ~60% chance the later games play out with no technical upsets (based on Ratings, not explicitly seed) and no margin of victory triggers.
