BEAST VIII Recap

Two weekends ago, we had the 8th Edition of JMU’s BEAST and overall had an opportunity to see how the East Coast stacks up. This article was co-written by my fellow captain Jeremy Shaw (JS) and myself and although it really doesn’t have much structure, it covers quite a few of the big storylines from the weekend. We also have some quotes from other Captains from teams in attendance, which will give you a little bit of insight on how (almost) every team at the tournament felt.

Standings as of 2019-03-05

Standings are aimed to be released by the end of every Tuesday.

In the 2019 Season, we have 38 technical upsets in 202 ranked matches (81.19% success rate) across 27 events. Additionally, there have been four JV matches entered into the Records.

The Gonzalez System is a computer ranking model similar to Elo and is a rating exchange system based on research performed by World Rugby. It has been adapted by the NCDA to the demands of College Dodgeball, but can be tuned and customized endlessly to incorporate accurate data. It has been used to help determine seeds for the Nationals bracket since Nationals 2014, and was used exclusively for the Nationals 2017 and 2018 bracket.

Power Rankings: March 2019

What a month! February 2019 was arguably one of the most entertaining months in the history of collegiate dodgeball. From the absolutely chaotic WAR III tournament, to the always telling MDC, to the wild finish at ODC, and everything in between, February was special. With all the crazy games we saw this past month come some shakeups in the monthly power rankings. Below is the official March 2019 Power Rankings list produced by NCDA Executive Board members Jacob Leski (Director of Recruitment and Retention) and Kevin Bailey (Chief of Content).  Please keep in mind: these power rankings have no impact on the actual NCDA Standings.

BOTM: 2019 February

Wow, what a month for College Dodgeball, right? Cleveland State hosted their first tournament, Akron hosted the third annual WAR two-day tournament, both the Michigan and Ohio Dodgeball Cups were hosted. AND The BEAST and Zanderthon Throw-down both went off without a hitch. With over 20 of the active league members playing in tournaments in February it was a daunting task to pick the Baller of the Month for such a stacked month. That makes this player that much more impressive.

Congratulations to your February 2019 Baller of the Month, Josh Lyons from the University of Akron.

Josh has been a staple of the Akron Zips Dodgeball Club since their inception in 2014 and for good reason. Season by season he continues to improve in every aspect of the game, from catching to throwing and helping lead the team to a 15-7 season thus far. Josh has proven time and time again that he is the unsung hero of the Akron program, until now. Below is the interview that I conducted with Josh.

Josh Lyons is one of Akron’s top performers consistently. This is him pictured at The War III hosted by Akron.

Zanderthon Throw-Down Recap 4

Last Saturday, February 23, 2019, these teams competed and battled it out at the Zanderthon Throw-Down: Northwestern State University of Louisiana (NSULA), University of Wisconsin Platteville (UWP), DePaul University, and the Alumni. The games went as expected and I think it is safe to say that everyone had a great time! We made new friends and introduced a lot of newcomers to the sport. Below are the scores for the day and a quick recap:

Did you forget about us?

This article was put together by Sean Smith (Towson ALumni)

The month of February appears like it will be very telling for how the rest of the NCDA season can expect to go down. The recent WAR in Akron provided a lot of insight as to where teams are, on all levels of the strength spectrum.

There’s no doubt that Grand Valley is still the odds-on favorite to win the title in April. They have everything on their side, history, talent, even home court advantage. Even if the Lakers should somehow falter, the Michigan Region looked much improved after this month. Michigan State followed-up their performance at WAR by exorcising their MDC demons (finishing with 2 wins), and Saginaw Valley and Central Michigan appear to have significantly improved since earlier this year as well. Outside of the Michigan Region, Towson appears to be a top choice, if not the choice to contend for the title in two months. Putting my personal feelings about my alma mater aside, I feel as if their meteoric rise past preseason expectations has cast a shadow over another true contender for the crown.

Preview: Ohio Dodgeball Cup 2019

Co-authored by
Tom Morand and Colby Briceland

The annual Ohio Dodgeball Cup will take place this upcoming weekend at Bowling Green State University. This year there will be 8 teams in attendance looking to take home the cup.  The ODC is structured in such a way that if only one team goes undefeated on the day they will win the Cup. In the case multiple teams end with the same record a tie breaker will be played after the conclusion of the scheduled matches to determine which team is the best in the Ohio region.

Stat Matchups

It’ll be a Saturday full of dodgeball with UWP’s Zanderthon Throw-Down, BGSU hosting ODC (preview to come), and JMU’s eight installment of BEAST. Although some (Adam Pfeifer) wish this could’ve been the Inaugural East Coast Dodgeball Cup, Penn State and West Virginia aren’t able to make the trip, so it’ll be the remaining five teams squaring off. This is the largest East Coast tournament that we’ve had this year, so it’ll give everybody a better understanding of how each team stacks up. Here’s the schedule for Saturday’s games:

Zanderthon Throw-Down

This Saturday, February 23, 2019, marks one of the most coveted tournaments of the semester. No, it is not the Ohio Dodgeball Cup or the Beast, it is the annual Zanderthon Throw-Down, the fourth of its kind. It will be played at the Williams Fieldhouse ( 350 Jay St Platteville, Wisconsin 53818).

The teams in attendance will be your two favorites from the Midway Conference: University of Wisconsin Platteville (UWP) and DePaul. The other team in attendance and making the long trip up to the great state of Wisconsin is Northwestern State University of Louisiana (NSULA).  This will be the first team outside the Midway to play in a tournament hosted by Platteville and we are excited to have them.

Also, UWP has an alumni team playing, but as we have said before they are washed up and no one is scared of them, especially Matt Bautch (very weak arm)!  Let’s take a look at the schedule for the day:

Chaos Ensues at Akron’s WAR III

The following was co-authored by Kevin Bailey, Hunter Ford and Colby Briceland.

Over the weekend, University of Akron hosted the biggest regular season tournament of the National Collegiate Dodgeball Association season.  15 teams made their way to Akron for the annual two-day tournament called ‘WAR’. As it turns out, the name fits the bill.

In attendance at this event were teams from five different regions.  Including 14 of the top 18 teams in the latest Power Rankings. Needless to say, there were some epic matches over the weekend.  In fact, an argument could be made it was the most entertaining regular season tourney in NCDA history. If you disagree, feel free to state your case.

Below is a recap of this unbelievable tournament:
