NCDA Scorigami

So the initial thought for someone reading this is probably, “what in the world is ‘Scorigami'”, or at least something along those lines.  The quick breakdown is that Scorigami looks at all the historical scores over time within any league and sees how frequently each result has happened.  It was an idea created by Jon Bois to implement with NFL scores.  In his case, he wanted to see which results have never happened before in the history of the NFL, in the hopes that teams eventually achieve every possible score to complete his chart.  For a full breakdown I recommend checking out his video on it here, and if you want to see what the NFL’s current Scorigami looks like check that out here.

Admittedly, a full Scorigami chart looks a lot cooler for American Football given how many different ways there are to score and with varying point values as compared to dodgeball.  Hopefully someone finds it entertaining though.  Aside from a pretty picture, we can use it to get a better understanding of the history of our league and see how scoring has changed over time.

It has been adapted by the NCDA to the demands of College Dodgeball, but can be tuned and customized endlessly to incorporate accurate data. It has been used to help determine seeds for the Nationals bracket since Nationals 2014, and was used exclusively for the Nationals 2017 and 2018 bracket.

If Bracket Play Started Today

As we transition from the first half of the year to the next, I wanted to take a look at where our teams stand at the midway point.  Some of our teams stormed out the gate to start the season, some appear to have lost a step, and others just fall somewhere in between.  While the 2018-19 season isn’t quite over, let’s pretend that everything stopped and we were preparing to hop right into 2019 Nationals bracket play tomorrow.  What would our bracket look like?  What are some of the best matchups?  Who could be our potential ‘Cinderella Story’?

Towson Continues to Roll at Home

The Towson Tigers were able to extend their winning streak and remain perfect on the season after 3 wins over familiar East Coast opponents in UMD, UVA, and VCU.  Towson continues to have a firm hold on most of the East Coast, and are in a prime position to compete for a national championship.  While the other aforementioned teams are still a step behind, there were some noteworthy performances from this past weekend that are worth recognizing, and we are starting to get a clearer picture of the East Coast as a whole.

Bye-Week Review of the NCDA

The first month of the 2018-19 NCDA  season is off to a hot start.  We have seen 19 different teams make their season debut over 6 different tournaments across the Michigan, Ohio, East Coast, and South regions.  There were some early predictions on how some thought the season would play out, some of which are shaping up to follow through while others seem like nothing more than speculation.  Additionally, the power structure of the league seems to be shifting in a way that maybe even veterans of the game could not have predicted.  It is still early in the year and a lot can change, there are some interesting takeaways from this first month that should be discussed.  Grades are listed at the bottom of the article.

2018 All-Rookie Team

With the rapid expansion of the league in the past few seasons, we have seen more and more talent emerge from all corners of the NCDA.  The future of the NCDA is bright, and we’d like to take the time to show off those who represent the brightest stars of the future generation of the NCDA.  These rookies have exemplified skills ahead of their years and have been big contributors to each of their programs even in a short amount of time.  Here is the NCDA All-Rookie Team:

Rookie of the Year
Payton Schuster (MSU)

Payton Schuster earns 2018 College Dodgeball Rookie of the Year after a stellar first season with Michigan State.  Schuster developed into one of MSU’s top offensives pieces in a very short amount of time during his first season with the Spartans.  The freshman had a breakout performance at the 2018 Michigan Dodgeball Cup in February, and has not slowed down since.  His impressive side-arm lefty throw paired with strong  catching skills make him arguably the most talented rookie in the league. His role will increase for MSU next year, as he has taken over captain duties for Michigan State.  Look for him to have a big sophomore season!

Ike Fleckenstein (VCU)

After putting on one of the best freshman performances at Nationals of all-time and earning the nickname “Mr. Reliable” from former MVPs Kevin Bailey and Colin O’Brien, it’s no surprise to see Fleckenstein on this list.  However, he has been solid all year for the Rams, and even found a spot onto VCU’s OT 6 squad in his first semester with the team.  While he was most notable for his catching ability, Fleckenstein also developed a solid throw early in his career which helped lead VCU’s offense in a pinch.  Next year he will serve as an assistant captain  for VCU.

Eric Nelson (CMU)

Central Michigan had plenty of star players on their team in 2017-18, but that shouldn’t take away fromt he type of recognition that their rookie Eric Nelson deserves.  Nelson was one of the top rookies in the country this year.  Nelson is a very talented dodgeballer, with a strong arm that can pick off opponents consistently, and the catching instincts that helped him make clutch plays all year for his team.  Nelson’s skills were never more obvious than during their win over GVSU in March when he came back from a last man standing to make several huge catches and throws to bring CMU back to win the point.  I expect to see many more sequences like that next year, as Nelson will be one of CMU’s top players in my opinion.
