Zanderthon Throw-Down

This Saturday, February 23, 2019, marks one of the most coveted tournaments of the semester. No, it is not the Ohio Dodgeball Cup or the Beast, it is the annual Zanderthon Throw-Down, the fourth of its kind. It will be played at the Williams Fieldhouse ( 350 Jay St Platteville, Wisconsin 53818).

The teams in attendance will be your two favorites from the Midway Conference: University of Wisconsin Platteville (UWP) and DePaul. The other team in attendance and making the long trip up to the great state of Wisconsin is Northwestern State University of Louisiana (NSULA).  This will be the first team outside the Midway to play in a tournament hosted by Platteville and we are excited to have them.

Also, UWP has an alumni team playing, but as we have said before they are washed up and no one is scared of them, especially Matt Bautch (very weak arm)!  Let’s take a look at the schedule for the day:

Battle of the Midway- Recap

Last Saturday, November 3, 2018, the Battle of the Midway took place between Southern Illinois Univeristy Edwardsville (SIUE) and Univeristy of Wisconsin Platteville (UWP).  The UWP alumni were in attendance too, but as Matt Batuch (UWP Alumni) said, they are washed up so they are not that important.  It was a exciting day, and the scores were as follows:

UWP- JV def SIUE 2-1

UWP Varsity def SIUE 4-2

UWP Alumni def UWP Varsity 3-2

UWP Varsity def SIUE 6-1

SIUE was at a higher level of play this year than they were the year before.  They worked really well as a team and were great at catching. For more than half the team, this was just their second time playing with rubber dodgeballs, as they are used to playing with foam.  That did not seem to stop them from picking up on how to throw and bringing the heat.  As the day went on, their confidence grew and their skill and understanding of the game got better. As they get more games in, and play more teams at their level they will pull out the wins.

Cornhusker Clash

Hello folks, it is that time of year and your favorite content writer is back at it again! This time he is previewing a battle between the top two teams in the Midway Conference, the Platteville Pioneers (UWP) and the Nebraska Cornhuskers (UNL). It has been a tradition the last few years for these teams to meet up for their first games and have at it.  This year the tournament is being held on October 6, 2018 at the Colosseum of the Recreation Center (address is 841 N 14th Street, Lincoln, Nebraska, 68588-1282).  Below is the schedule for the day. 2018 All-Midway Team

The 2017-2018 season was a year for the Midway Conference to build and grow.  This year the Midway played the most games they ever had and traveled more than they have ever before.  With that, it bred some tough competition between these teams and led to some stand out players. The following list was chosen by their peers and here are the top 18 players of the Midway.

Here is your 2018 All-Midway Team:

MVP: Tim Ebert (UWP)

This individual did it all for Platteville. Tim would catch when a catch was needed and had an arm to go along with it.  As a captain, he made his presence know on the court and had a killer ball fake.

-Written by Erik Zander

2. Alec Scott (DePaul)

Captain Fluffy, the bearded wonder. I was always amazed on the amount of hair he could grow on his face, a true talent.  This guy was definitely my top player in the Midway Conference.  He threw harder than anyone out there and was an effective communicator on the court.  I always hated going against his throw.  They will be missing him next year on the court.

-Written by Erik Zander

3. Erik Zander (UWP)

Despite battling an injury for part of the season, Erik Zander’s strong play has earned him the #3 spot on this list.  Erik has been a great leader for Wisconsin Platteville over the past few seasons.  He is a big reason why UWP remains atop the Midway Conference each year.  Not only is Erik a dependable player for the Pioneers as both a thrower and catcher, he is also a very important on court presence.
