BOTM: 2018 February

Akron’s Colby Briceland is your February BOTM.

Sorry for the delay, but I am happy to finally announce that our Baller of the Month for February is Colby Briceland from University of Akron.  Colby had a very eventful month of February.  Here’s a quick recap:

On Feb. 10, Colby hosted the largest collegiate tournament of the season at his school, Akron University.  “The War” lived up to the hype as one of the most significant tournaments of the NCDA’s regular season and Colby played a major role in making sure this two-day event took place.

Just one week later, Colby put together a team of college dodgeballers from various teams throughout Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan to travel to Grand Rapids, Michigan for the GR Open.  They played under the team name “Ohio Legacy” despite only a few of the players being regulars on that team.  Colby did a great job introducing these players to a new format of dodgeball with a new community of players.

The following week Colby was again in action on the dodgeball court as he led his Akron team to a very solid showing at the annual Ohio Dodgeball Cup.  Continue reading “BOTM: 2018 February”

BOTM: 2017 December

December may seem like it was a year ago, but the NCDA’s Baller of the Month for December is JMU’s Doug Schilling. This award is long over due for Doug, who has been a key player for them since the day he stepped on the court his freshman year. Take a gander at my conversation with this year’s potential MVP: Continue reading “BOTM: 2017 December”

BOTM: 2017 November

Baller of the Month – November 2017 Kristofer DeJesus

Kris DeJesus

Kris DeJesus is November’s BOTM, and I’ve gotta say, this was very well deserved.  Everyone loves a good underdog story, and for many years that has been the Stevenson Mustang’s reputation.  However, with all the blood, sweat, and (maybe?) tears that Kris has put into this program, we are seeing the fruits of that labor.  He has lead this team to their first wins in program history, and has also demonstrated that his talent level is above and beyond the average NCDA baller.

The kid can do it all.  Catch, throw, block, you name it.  More or less, the dodgeball version of Boobie Miles.  Kris has a big presence on the court as both a player and leader for this team, that much has been easy to see this year.  I had a chance to chat with Kris to talk about his success and congratulate him on being our November BOTM.

BOTM: 2017 September

The one thing lacking in Michael Riley’s game, is that he doesn’t have any good dodgeball action shots. Someone bring a camera to CMU’s next tournament and fix this…

Michael Riley – Central Michigan

The Baller of the Month for September goes to one of the most well known players in the league: Michael Riley.  Taking over as captain for Central Michigan University this year, Riley has had a very successful start to his tenure.  The Chippewas currently are undefeated with a 6-0 record.  Not only that, but they have avenged their title game loss to Grand Valley State with an early season 4-2 win over the defending champs.

Riley has made a name for himself over the years both for his impressive on court skills, as well as for his abundance of confidence.  He has developed into an all-around star player for the Chippewas, and is one of my early favorites to take home league MVP at the end of the season.

I had the privilege of interviewing one of dodgeball’s most talented (and outspoken) stars.  My conversation with Michael hit on many topics, including his take on CMU’s early season success, his leadership style, what his go-to pregame meal is, who he would least want to fist fight in the NCDA, and how much money he lost thanks to an ill-advised preseason bet that he made…  Check out our interview below: Continue reading “BOTM: 2017 September”

BOTM: 2017 March

March Baller of the Month: Ben Tubergen – GVSU

After leading Grand Valley State University to yet another Michigan Dodgeball Cup title, along with a strong showing at GVSU’s Blast from the Past tournament, Ben Tubergen earned himself “Baller of the Month”.  Ben has emerged this year as one of the most dangerous players in the league with a strong and accurate throw, to go along with good catching skills.  He has been a catalyst for GVSU’s offense so far this season, and will be a key to their success in a few weeks when they compete at Nationals 2017 in Lexington, KY.

I had the chance to chat with Ben after he won Baller of the Month.  Our conversation touches on a number of topics, from his mindset heading into Nationals, to his dodgeball career outside of the NCDA, to the controversy over what grade he is actually in.  I even ask him the ever-important question: “Chipotle or Qdoba?”.  Here is my interview with GVSU’s Ben Tubergen. Baller of the Month – March Madness Bracket

Alright folks, big news.

For the month of March, there will be a different process in place for determining the Baller of the Month.  The National Collegiate Dodgeball Association’s Content team has narrowed the list down to 8 candidates.  Those 8 finalists are as follows (in no particular order):

February’s BOTM: Hunter Ford of VCU (Seen here with no eye black… a rare occurrence these days).

February’s Baller of the Month was all but decided four days into the month when JMU’s BEAST VI tournament concluded.  It was clearly time to recognize the efforts of Virginia Commonwealth’s team, more specifically, their captain: Hunter Ford.

I had the chance to have a discussion with Hunter, and it was a very telling one.  We chat about a variety of topics, ranging from his role on VCU’s team, to his thoughts on the ranking system, to his talent as a ‘Twitter Jockey’, and much more.  Congratulation Hunter on being VCU’s first ever BOTM.  Here is my talk with the leader for VCU Dodgeball:

BOTM: January 2017 – Jeff Schwartz (PSU)

Our very first Baller of the Month award for 2017 will go to Penn State University’s Jeff Schwartz.  Jeff has been a major influence for their program for a long time, and helped organize the team’s first ever home tournament on January 14th.  He is being recognized for his play on the court, as well as for the contributions he has made to his program.

December Baller of the Month- Brian Hymel (DePaul)

It gives me great pleasure to announce Brian Hymel as the December Baller of the Month.  He is an excellent player and one that you should never throw at alone, as many other teams who have played against him know.  Not only is he a great catcher, but he also has strong arm that you have to watch out for.  He is definitely a top 10 player in the league and this semester many teams will see why.  Check out the conversation below that I had with Brian.   Continue reading “BOTM: 2016 December”

For the month of November it is Kyle Dattelbaum and Liam Bartlett of the University of North Georgia.  Both serve as captains for the team, and have had a significant impact on getting their brand new team up and running for the 2016-17 season.  They are being awarded for their start-up accomplishments, along with their performance during the Dahlonega Dodgefall Fest.

Michael Hinely [Towson 7-A]

mike-hinleyThe October Baller of the Month has been awarded to Towson’s Michael Hinely.  The Junior serves as one of the Captains for the Towson Dodgeball Club, and has played a very big role in the continuous improvement and advancement of their program.  As a friend and competitor with Hinely over the course of our careers, I can personally say this was well deserved.

BOTM: 2016 June

leski

Jacob Leski – Central Michigan

The Baller of the Month for June goes to a recent graduate from Central Michigan University: Jacob Leski.  Jake was a top performer on a CMU team that finished as national runner-up for the second straight season.

Jake finished up his career at CMU with a stellar performance at Nationals (the championship game in particular).  Without a doubt he leaves behind a legacy as one of the most impactful catchers in the NCDA.

I had the pleasure to interview Jake on a number of topics, including his on-court strategy, favorite dodgeball memories, and his future plans.  Take a look at our interview below:
