The annual Zanderthon Throw-Down took place on March 2nd at the University of Wisconsin Platteville. This event was between Platteville, their alumni and a new addition to the league, the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Let’s take a look at the results from the day and here from the players and coaches!
The following were questions that I asked of current players and coaches.
Erik Zander- What did you think of your team’s performance?
Jacob Sebranek (Stout)– I thought the team played really well together. Playing outnumbered certainly made them tired but they stuck to the fundamentals really well. The matches showed a few things like high throws and low blocking that need to be cleaned up but it was an impressive first performance.
Caleb Laux (UWP)– Our team performed well this weekend. We gave UW-Stout a taste of what the league is like. We also gave our players more experience fighting for points when the captains are sitting out, which could prove useful in future tournaments and when they take up the leadership roles in the future.
Abigail Laux (Stout)– I think our team did pretty well, even though we are a new team and also were short on numbers.
EZ- Who on your team stood out?
JS-Tyler Mathison stood out for me in the match vs Platteville for his arm and Angel Lucero stood out throughout the day for selflessly blocking for teammates even if it put him in a disadvantageous position. Kole Woyczik made several good cross throws in the 6v6 matchups.
CL-This tournament we had two freshman taking turns calling the shots on the court. Daniel Breitenstein and Bryden Hundt did a great job in this role and it is great to see how they are progressing.
AL-I think Zoe Olson stood out. He was very encouraging to our team and was eager to take the lead.
EZ-What are you looking forward to?
CL-I’m really looking forward to nationals this year. I think that this squad has grown a lot and is ready to take it to whoever we get matched up against. I’d like a couple wins on my birthday.
AL-I’m looking forward to more competitions in the future, and improving our skills now that we know what we are up against.
Final Thoughts– Another successful Zanderthon Throw-Down is in the books. We got to see some familiar faces in action and some new ones from our friends at UW-Stout. They have officially joined the NCDA and added another Wisconsin school to the league. If you didn’t get a chance to see the action, check out the games at the links below!
