Spartans Get Invite To 2013 Chicago Dodgeball Open

Michigan State will travel to Depaul to play in the 2013 Chicago Dodgeball Open in early January this season. It will be the third straight year that State has participated in the tournament, and they have had great success there. They previously won the tournament in the early years of the NCDA, and in the past two seasons in the CDO the Spartans are 6-2. In 2011 they beat Moody Bible, Western Illinois, and Depaul, and narrowly lost 2-1 to eventual National Champion Central Michigan. The following season they beat Western Illinois 4-2, Nebraska 14-0, and Moody 5-0 before losing to Grand Valley 4-1. The CDO is a highlight of the season for many of the Spartans, as they get to travel to Chicago and make a weekend out of the tournament.

As of now there are 6 teams headed to the CDO, including co-host schools Depaul and Moody Bible. Michigan State will also be joined by Big Ten foe Nebraska, in-state rival Grand Valley, and emerging power James Madison. The Spartans have had much success against Depaul and Moody, and they thoroughly enjoy playing them. The same can’t be said for their match-ups with Grand Valley and James Madison. State has never beaten GVSU, and they lost their only match against JMU at Nationals 2012. The Spartans have only faced Nebraska once, but they were able to defeat them handily. All of the other schools participating are schools that Michigan State would like to play, all for different reasons, and it should be a great tournament.

First Practice Dates Announced For 2012-2013 Season

President Mike Van Ermen has announced that the Spartans will begin hosting open practices starting Tuesday, September 4th, from 8-10 pm in the IM Circle Main Gym. Following that practice, State will hold practice every Tuesday and Thursday at the same time and same place. The last open practice will be September 27th, and after that a small due will need to be paid to get membership with the team. The first month of open practice will be free however, and the Spartans expect to have over a hundred participants for the third straight season.

Feel free to RSVP to the official Open Dodgeball Practice event on facebook, and email Sam Hiller ( hillers1@msu.edu ) if you have any questions.

Sparticipation Is Right Around The Corner!

Sparticipation 2012 is less than three weeks away! Held at Munn Field in the middle of MSU’s campus, Sparticipation is a big fair where all the clubs, including the Michigan State Club Dodgeball Team, have tables. If you’re interested in playing for the Spartans, stop by! There will be flyers, showings of matches, and a ball people can throw, to go along with the opportunity to speak to current Spartan players about what it’s like to be on the team.

Sparticipation 2012 is on August 28th from 5:00-8:00 pm. Besides meeting all the representatives of the clubs, there will also be fireworks and a cookout!

The Michigan State Club Dodgeball Team is a co-ed team that does not cut players from the roster. They practice Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8-10 pm at IM Circle in the main gym, and they travel across the country to play schools like Ohio State, Maryland, Kentucky, Depaul, and Nebraska.

If you’re interested in playing or have any questions, feel free to email Captain Sam Hiller at hillers1@msu.edu or join the Michigan State Club Dodgeball Recruiting Class of 2012 group on facebook!

Average Joe’s Podcast News

This season, the Average Joe’s Podcast (the official podcast of the NCDA) will be taken over by two Spartans: President Mike Van Ermen and Captain Sam Hiller. They’ll discuss previews, recaps, issues in the sport, interviews with other players, the standings, and a whole lot more.

They’re also going to try and get your feel for the sport, using social media. Feel free to tweet them at @AvgJoePodcast or respond to them using the Average Joe’s Podcast Facebook page or the National College Dodgeball Association Facebook page.

The season is right around the corner, so expect a podcast coming up later this month or early September. For now though, feel free to listen to some of the older podcasts made by former WKU Captain Josh Raymer, or one made by Depaul previewing last season’s National Tournament.
