March Baller of the Month: Kyle Foster (SVSU)

The Baller of the Month for March is Kyle Foster of Saginaw Valley State University. Kyle played outstanding for SVSU as he helped lead his team to two upset wins and nearly the title at the Michigan Dodgeball Cup. Kyle has long been a key player for his team and this honor is well deserved and perhaps a long time coming.

Standings as of 2016-03-27

This week sees a solidification for teams as they settle into a solid average, according to the NCDA Ranking Algorithm. GVSU is now ranked first in each of the four systems, this is a similar situation going into Nationals last year. We still have two events remaining with maybe a dozen more games to go. Look to see the lower-middle tier jumble in upcoming weeks. These teams generally are both close in games played and tight in their average, so any results will float these teams to their deserving ranking going into Nationals. We have an astounding 175 events and an average 14.5 games played per team thus far into the Season; plenty of data to build a ranking for each team! Continue reading “Standings as of 2016-03-27”

MVEC Preview

Oh man, what do I even say about this tournament? It feels like ever since JMU hit the national scene about five years ago that the players between these two conferences have been clamoring for a regular season blowout tournament. Ok, maybe not a blowout, but people have been hoping that as the East Coast Conference has risen the teams over here would be able to face their Midwest counterparts during the regular season. There have been some regular season matchups before (BEAST and other various tournaments), but this marks the first time I can remember that multiple teams from either region have travelled the distance to the other. Saturday looks to be a barometer for a lot of teams heading into April and Nationals. Let’s take a look at the matchups.

The Way We See It

By: Captains of the Platteville Dodgeball Club (Matt Bautch & Erik Zander)

uwp-logoThe Platteville Dodgeball Club is writing this article to bring up topics that we feel should be talked about in the league.  We discuss various topics that we have seen over the years that we feel are keeping the league from being really competitive.  In this writing if you feel we we’re calling out your team we are sorry and didn’t mean to.  After you read this we would love to hear on the captains’ page if you agree or disagree as well as any other things you feel that we may have missed.  Hopefully, this brings about some great discussion and will bring some changes for next year. Gonzalez Preview for MVEC

We’ll see some great regular season matches this Saturday. Although no particular straight even pairs are seen, we have a handful of rating gaps that are not out of range for the lower rated team. Interestingly, Towson’s home court advantage boost may put them in range to upset JMU and MSU. Upsets here are not unreachable and will allow Towson to make advantageous gains in a number of systems, take a look at a full rundown after the jump!

Average Rating: 50.747
Average Rating Gap: 9.301
Average Predicted Exchange: 0.303
Average Exchange if Upset: 1.930

What kind of shirt for the Ladies’ Match?

nationals-2016-ladies
2016 NCDA Ladies’ Match design by Zigmas Maloni and Mia Giano [BGSU]
Dodgeballers, an open question. Since 2012 the NCDA has been hosting a Ladies’ Match at Nationals. For this year’s shirts we specifically asked you for your size in unisex shirts.

This comes from last year’s registration where I asked 5 people what kind of sizing style was wanted, and the women’s cuts where universally hated among that small population. Much of it was that sizes so differ with different shirts, and that the architecture of the arm cuff doesn’t allow for any athletic movement.

So some questions to the source, for those that will be wearing these shirts. What kind of shirt would you want to wear? And if you were limited to an ordinary cotton shirt (as we often are due to cost), what type of sizing and format would you be looking for?

We’ve sent off the designs and shirt sizes to the printers last friday, so this won’t change anything this year. But I’d really like to know your thinking behind a dodgeball shirt so we can be the best in the future.

Proposal building on Match Court Numbers

Rule proposal by ‎Adam Pfeifer‎ [Akron]

I know there is a form of this proposed but I have talked to a few people and think this would be a better solution. We will call Akron team one and Baldwin Wallace team two. Akron can only bring 11 players to a tournament. Baldwin Wallace has a full roster + 2 so 17 total. Instead of Akron being four people down a whole match the rule would be as followed. First point Baldwin Wallace would still play 15. Akron would have 11. After the first point Baldwin Wallace would go down to 12 active players on the rush and have their other three players on the side line who can still get in the game if they get catches. The reason for this proposal is for two reasons. One we have had teams drop out of tournaments because they could only get 11 or 12 people. In their mind why go when you are at a huge disadvantage at the start. Two this would add to the level of competition at tournaments when teams cannot get a full roster.

Arguments for this. Teams with full rosters will still keep an advantage in these games. This will also help a lot of new programs with being able to actually play and gain solid experience. How does everyone feel about this rule?

Gonzalez Preview for BW Invite

A very similar event to the Ohio Dodgeball Cup on the surface, but let’s scratch a bit deeper. There’s plenty of tests on the Gonzalez system here. First, we can take a look at how a #2 team performs against three teams that average a gap of 17 under CMU. Among 963 games there is a strong predictability that these matches won’t be upsets, all of those would fall in the top three largest exchanges.
